TV review: Syfy channel’s original movie ‘Blast Vegas’

Blast Vegas July 18, 9 p.m., Syfy

Last week, the Syfy original movie Sharknado became a social media sensation thanks to its catchy title and memorably absurd premise (a tornado full of sharks!). The new Las Vegas-set Syfy movie Blast Vegas is unlikely to drum up the same level of interest, but it’s as reliably cheesy and moronic as any of the channel’s offerings. As usual, there’s a cast of D-listers (Frankie Muniz, Barry Bostwick, Joey Lawrence’s brother Andrew) fending off a poorly conceived disaster while delivering lame dialogue. Here, an ancient curse is unleashed on Las Vegas (played by Indio, California) when some frat dudes disturb an Egyptian artifact at a Luxor-like casino. The curse is basically just a really bad wind storm, so it’s not too different from normal Vegas weather. There are a few amusing Vegas touches, including a climax that involves climbing to the top of (a set that sort of looks like) the Eiffel Tower at Paris, but overall Blast Vegas is nothing more than typical Syfy garbage.
