As someone far wiser than I once said, they'll be groovin' ... on a Sunday afternoon.

Led by Lee Richey, cellist in “Phantom -- the Las Vegas Spectacular” who has also worked with musicians from the College of Southern Nevada, about 40 musicians are performing at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Community Lutheran Church at 3720 E. Tropicana Ave. The purpose, other than to enjoy some of the city’s finest musicians play a variety of music, is to raise money for the Las Vegas Musicians Union Local 369 Emergency Relief Fund.

No admission charge is required, but those attending are asked to donate to the fund, which was launched in 1989 to help assist Las Vegas musicians who are union members in good standing and are suffering financially.

The event’s news release says the program is to begin with Debussy's “Prelude a l’après midi d’un faune,” which will feature Tina Hadley (a member of the flute section of the Las Vegas Philharmonic) on solo flute and Kim Glennie (principal harpist of the Las Vegas Philharmonic) on solo harp. The Mozart Concerto No. 3 in G Major for Violin, K. 216, “Strassburg,” with Laraine Kaizer-Viazovtsev (assistant principal second violinist with the Las Vegas Philharmonic and area violin teacher and painter) follows.

Ending the concert is Richard Strauss’s “Der Burger Als Edelmann” or “Le Bourgeois Gentihomme.” This work also will feature several of the instrumentalists as soloists, including concertmaster Lenka Hajkova (violinist with Celine Dion's orchestra). The concert is Richey’s debut as a conductor in Las Vegas.
