Dining News & Notes: Last Sip & Savor at Spago for chef Eric Klein

The Lucky Dragon, the hotel and casino set to open in December on Sahara Avenue just west of the Strip, recently announced its planned culinary portfolio. Chef Willy Ng of San Francisco’s Koi Palace and Dragon Beaux has consulted for the new resort’s five restaurants, collaborating with executive chef Phuoc Luu, from Golden Nugget, and executive chef de cuisine Jacky Leung, from Palazzo. The lineup: Dragon’s Alley, a night market-themed street food concept with a central show kitchen; Pearl Ocean, a dim sum and live seafood restaurant; Phoenix, a “cutting-edge” Chinese fine dining restaurant; Cha Garden, a lobby-area, poolside, indoor-outdoor tea garden; and Bao Now, a 24-hour café featuring soups, rice, noodles and boba tea.

Spago will host its annual Sip & Savor event to benefit Keep Memory Alive on September 14 at 6 p.m., and it will be the last day for longtime Spago executive chef Eric Klein, who is leaving the position he’s held for almost 10 years. Klein has been with the Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group for 16 years, starting in California. He moved to Las Vegas to become executive chef at Wynn’s SW Steakhouse in 2005, rejoining Puck in 2007. The cuisine and chefs from Puck restaurants Spago, Cut, Lupo, Cucina and Wolfgang Puck Bar & Grill at both MGM Grand and Downtown Summerlin locations will be featured at the event, and tickets are $150 and can be purchased by calling 702-369-6300.

The Las Vegas Food & Wine Festival returns, this time at SLS, with two ticketed events this month. The Whole-Ox Feast at Bazaar Meat is set for September 15 at 6:30 p.m. ($95) featuring chef José Andrés, Bay Area rancher Bill Niman and butcher Adam Danforth preparing a special menu from a single 2,200-pound Black Angus ox. The Cleo Brunch will be held at the Mediterranean restaurant September 18 at 11 a.m. ($50). Tickets for both events can be purchased at slsvegas.com/vegasfoodandwine.

The sixth-annual Cheers to Chocolate event to benefit Easter Seals Nevada is set for September 16 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the District at Green Valley Ranch. A variety of treats, cocktails and wine from local restaurants and sweet shops will gather in addition to the event’s live music and silent auction. Tickets are $35 in advance and $40 at the door and can be found at events.eastersealsnevada.com.

Crafthaus Brewery celebrates is second anniversary with the Hop Bomb Festival on September 17 from 5 to 11 p.m. More than 20 beers will be on tap, including new releases and revived past favorites, as well as live music and food trucks. Golden Nugget hosts its seventh annual Beerfest Weekend this month, including the All American Craft Beer Tasting on September 17 at 7 p.m. at the Grand Event Center featuring more than 125 beers ($59), and the Oktoberfest Pool Party on September 18 at 1 p.m. at the Tank pool (free, beers available for purchase). Tickets for both events can be purchased by calling 866-946-5336.

Chef Justin Kingsley Hall of SLO-Boy Food is teaming with Tenaya Creek Brewery for a special, four-course beer-pairing dinner on September 19 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $60 and can be found at brownpapertickets.com.

Andiron Steak & Sea at Downtown Summerlin is now open for lunch, serving dishes like avocado toast, crispy calamari, burrata and roasted peaches, the little gem steak salad and the old fashioned burger, plus a brand-new selection of sandwiches and fish and chips. Lunch hours are Monday-Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Opening at Downtown Grand in the next two weeks will be Freedom Beat, a restaurant and live music venue described as “Divers, Drive-Ins and Dives meets American Pickers, replacing the former S&O café. On the menu: chicken fried bacon and red, white and blue velvet waffles. Freedom Beat will be open 24 hours.

Rouge Lounge at MGM Grand closed recently to make way for Losers Bar, a Nashville dive bar concept featuring live music set to open in December.
